Spring/Summer Volunteer Opportunities on Patos Island — 3 Comments

  1. Greetings,

I am a Sophomore studying Civil Engineering at Montana State University in Bozeman. Growing up in Eastern Washington, every time I traveled to my grandparent’s small cabin on Center Island it was a unique and exciting experience. The ocean has an incredible way of changing lives and inspiring thoughts.

Whether it is kayaking among seals, traversing dangerous whirlpools in Deception Pass, visiting the many farms and communities on the bigger islands, or learning about the unique history of the region, the San Juans have captivated my imagination and shaped my personality.

The Patos Lighthouse embodies Island life and the rich historical and ecological significance of a place that so many cherish.

My experience in journalism with my campus newspaper, The Exponent, would lend itself to the legacy of Patos. Over the years I have learned, through critique, trial, and error, of how to tell stories that are relevant, accurate, truthful, and meaningful.

I want to tell the story of the West: the places, people, and landscapes. From the richest Rail Baron to the poorest squaw; from the tallest mountain to the smallest island, and a Docent Stay at the Lighthouse would be a vital chapter in this story.

I am looking forward to hearing back from you.

  2. Hello – We are looking into a custom charter boat to visit the Patos Light at the end of July. My son is really wanted to get a stamp in his passport. Would you please tell me if the lighthouse will be open on either Friday July 29 or Saturday July 30?
